Chapter Nineteen

The giant eye blinks as I recoil. Hines picks up his feet and begins sprinting as something unfurls from the underside of the bridge, what looks like a section of black rope. The black rope seems to be tracking his movements.

The rope snaps out like an adder and nearly snags around Hines’s legs, causing him to scream and me to bellow: “WE’VE GOT PROBLEMS! LITTLE HELP, PLEASE!”

A mammoth form erupts from under a portion of the bridge as everyone looks on, struck dumb at the sight of what I believe is Abaddon, Ruler of the Pit, Destroyer of Souls. He’s a dragon on steroids with an oversized mouth that opens to reveal a gullet as black as the bottom of the ocean that’s studded with ten-foot-long incisors. I have a vague recollection of Lucifer utilizing Abaddon’s services back in the First War.

The team has actually been walking across Abaddon’s backside as the great beast slumbered directly under the bridge. Its tail is actually the rope that’s currently trying to wrap around Hines.

“Please tell me I’m hallucinating,” I say, trying to back up.

Hines swallows hard as Abaddon rises to its full height, a fifty-foot Lovecraftian nightmare with tentacles and talons. The monstrosity brings its arms and bulk down, causing what’s left of the bridge to list.

I lead the team in scaling down the other side of the bridge before turning to see Hines slipping. I whistle and Tiffany grabs Hines’s wrist, holding onto her for dear life as she grunts and swings. The pair fall on their backs and slide down the bridge toward us as we roll off onto the ground on the other side of the chasm. We quickly regroup and take up defensive positions as Michael tries to pop another flare that fails to light.

I tense, hammer out, and hear the whoosh of wings in the darkness. I wheel around, my eyes scanning, sensing for movement.

“It’s close!” I say.

“Thanks for the news flash, numbnuts!” Michael retorts.

I backtrack, then commence stumbling through the silty gloom, only to see that I’ve been separated from the others. I flinch at an unexpected flash of movement, a glimpse of something just beyond my line of sight. It could be Amara and the others...or something else.

I inch forward, unease becoming dread, squinting, spotting nothing at first. I’m relieved for a brief second until I see Abaddon’s mouth shooting right at me. I swing my hammer, but I’m a split second too late.

The monster grabs me in its mouth and bites down hard.

I look down as the thing’s teeth tear through my flesh in a welter of blood. The upper half of my body separates from the lower half, sending coils of shiny intestines into the air.

I’m dead.

My eyes close and the last sound I hear are the two pieces of my angelic corpses splatting on the ground as—

BOOM!

My eyes snap open.

I’m back.

Back in the void. Standing in the same spot, peering into the shadows.

“Whoa!” I say, throwing out my arms for balance. “What the hell just happened?”

Michael’s voice comes to me, rattling around inside my skull.
